Somebody more understanding of Microsoft licensing please help me out here. Talking with a fellow admin (different org) that is also bound by CMMC and recently did a shift to GCC. He told me he had a nice surprise after migrating to GCC; Windows Enterprise licenses don't come with GCC or GCC-H M365 G3 or G5 unless you have an EA with Microsoft. He linked to the Microsoft GCC Subscription Matrix here that does clearly state Windows licenses are EA only (page 6, 3rd row from the bottom). He says his org is having to purchase Windows Enterprise as a subscription to get around this, as his organization has <500 users. I work for a similiarily sized organization. A few months ago, I purchased E3+EMS E5 commercial to lab with before moving to GCC. I assigned these licenses to a test user, signed the user in to a lab laptop via Settings>Accounts>Access Work or School (laptop was already on-prem domain joined) and the Windows license immediately changed from Pro to Enterprise. Similarly, when I was done labbing, removing the E3+E5 license from the user removed the Enterprise license from Windows. This Learn article says this was normal behavior and doesn't say anything different about GCC being different and requiring an EA. There's also the below note in that article, and I can't figure out what GCC High users are supposed to do: Can somebody else confirm I will have to purchase Enterprise Subscription licenses in addition to the GCC-H E3+EMS E5 licenses I am planning on purchasing? Will purchasing the GCC-H licenses sign me up for an EA, and therefore allow me to not have to purchase the additional Enterprise Subscription? Thank you very much for any help you can offer in advance. [link] [comments] |
